Victoria Grounds is the homeowner and daughter of architect Roy grounds, she provided a private tour of heritage listed Ramsay House (c1937). NEON: END OF AN ERA: OCTOBER 2023
Oct 26, 2023
Our own Mr Neon, Michael Blazek from Neon Signs Australia, has retired and the Brisbane workshop has now closed, truly the end of an era. We have all enjoyed the talks and tours about Neon, and the opportunity to salvage and save Neon signs, and personally the beginnings of my own Neon sign collection. My last piece of salvaged neon was the installation of a recycled ‘Yellow Line’, used as an architectural statement for our home. Best Wishes and Cheers to Micheal and Julie, enjoy your retirement.

EVERYONE NEEDS SOME NEON
Oct 26, 2023
A popular pastime on holidays is to browse antique and collectable stores in your travels. This Palm Court Lounge & Cocktail Bar neon sign was found for sale in Innisfail, its past life was at the former Cairns International Hotel. Thanks to our friends Kim & Alby for finding the sign, and our compliments to Cairns Pack & Send for packing and shipping it to Brisbane. Another old sign saved and added to our personal Neon sign collection .

NEWCASTLE MAD WEEKEND: APRIL 2023
Oct 26, 2023
At the suggestion of friend and architect Stephen Batey, the Brisbane Modern crew along with our Sydney modernist friends descended on Newcastle in April for a MAD Weekend. Featuring a city walking tour of architecture of the 20th century, which highlighted a significant building from each decade. The former council administration building is an iconic ‘round’ brutalist style building, and was designed by architect Frederick Romberg in 1977. This monumental building has been transformed into the Crystalbrook Kingsley, a heritage-listed luxury hotel, the conversion both celebrates and protects Newcastle’s history.

1954: ELLA, ETTA, EARTHA
May 26, 2021
A unique and intimate evening with Melissa Western, swinging jazz, cheeky kitsch and powerful soul, 1950’s style, live in the lounge room of our mid-century modernist home at Carina.
It’s the year 1954. Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Eartha Kitt are all at the dizzy heights of their careers. With swinging jazz, powerful soul and cheeky kitsch these three women broke new ground for all who followed after.
Singer/actor Melissa Western and her world class band pay tribute to this magnificent era in music and inspiring trio of pioneering singers. This ‘up close’ boutique performance experience is hosted in the relaxed home environment of festival favourite venue Australian Modern. Surrounded by authentic mid-century style this is a deluxe event.
“Western is a force of nature…Great storyteller, feisty, highly enjoyable; … Warm, witty and supremely talented … captivating …fantastic instrumentalists”

MYSTIQUE & MEANDERINGS: CONCERT
May 26, 2021
In May, Australian Modern and the Anywhere Festival presented Mystique & Meanderings, a concert of classical cello & piano duets.
A unique and intimate evening of chamber music, with award winning cellist Danielle Bentley and pianist Leanne Swanson, live in the lounge room of our mid-century modernist home at Carina. Meandering through four centuries of melodic themes… moving from Bach, through Beethoven, Bloch, Glazunov, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Schumann, culminating in a wild grand tango of Piazzolla.
For both Danielle and Leanne music is a reflection of their personalities, a direct extension of themselves and their extremely expressive musical abilities.

THE NEON LIGHT STILL SHINES
May 26, 2021
A new event for the Anywhere Festival. The Neon Light Still Shines—A Neon Sign Bus Tour was exactly as described: a tour, on a bus, in the dark, looking at neon signs. But, as a co-production between Chris Osborne (Australian Modern) and Michael ‘Mr Neon’ Blazek (Neon Signs Australia), it was so very much more than ‘just’ a tour.
This event was a memorable four hours in the company of one of the influential re/creators of neon in Brisbane. The opportunity to see Brisbane through the eyes of a master craftsman/glass bender/sign master brings a new dimension to experiencing the city.
The Neon Light Still Shines bus tour is a deft blending of art, craft, commerce, and heritage. NOTE: Neon sign bus tours are also available for group bookings.

MAD SATURDAY: SYDNEY MAY 2021
May 26, 2021
What has become an almost annual event, MAD Saturday in Sydney, was delayed for a year due to Covid travel restrictions.
The usual MAD mob were happy to gather and explore some local architecture in the Northern Beaches area. This year included some Brutalist style architecture, featuring the Sulman award winning Dee Why Library (1966) and the Warringah Civic Centre (1973) both designed by architect Colin Madigan. Followed by a visit to St Kevin’s Catholic Church (Oaks Ave, Dee Why), also close by was the previous Surfrider Motel Dee Why (now apartments) which were designed by architect Nino Sydney.
A late afternoon walk at Avalon enabled us to see some existing (modified) Beachcombers in their natural environment. David and Helen then hosted a social evening at their immaculately restored Beachcomber: the photo shows the MAD mob on the lawn outside David and Helen’s Beachcomber at…

LOST, FOUND & SAVED
Jun 30, 2020
Architect William ‘Bill’ Heather recently visited the first home he designed, located in Seven Hills (Brisbane). The existence of this 1964 house was unknown until only recently. The provenance was coincidently discovered by Gabrielle Baker following a recent isolation dinner with Bill and Maria Heather. The house is currently being restored by its new owners, saving mid-century modernist architecture. Bill is still working in his retirement, his architectural career now spanning 56 years.

SAVE THE SIGNS

Bars come and go, many operating successfully for years before closing and then re-opening with a new identity and name. The ‘Heya Bars’ operated in the converted ‘Sun Newspaper’ building in Fortitude Valley. One day the neon sign just appeared for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
Following repairs by our own Mr Neon, the Heya Bars sign now has a new life at Australian Modern in Carina. While we’re currently unable to do any entertaining, Susan has been doing a lot of sewing. She is shown modelling her latest Marimekko creations alongside our newly installed neon sign.

A big thankyou to the fabulous Mandy & Paul for hosting the MAD Christmas Party at their amazing home, the tropical vintage dress theme was certainly appropriate for the Brisbane heat wave. EVERYONE NEEDS SOME NEON
Jan 16, 2020
In the last couple of years people have become more aware of the importance of preserving vintage signs, ‘Save The Signs’ has become a catch phrase. Michael Blazek at Neon Signs Australia (Brisbane), is a champion in the art of glass bending, he has also entertained us with slide shows of Neon from his travels. I’m the proud owner of a small collection of Neon signs, Regatta (Hotel), Chinese Dragon (HK), Carina (Carina Tattooing), and my latest acquisition the HEYA bar (Fortitude Valley). Perhaps there will be a Neon workshop and bus tour in Brisbane later in the year with our own Mr Neon, Michael Blazek https://www.neonsign.com.au/ Do you want your very own Neon, or have any Neon signs that need repairs?

SYDNEY SAFARI: Mini-MAD Weekend
Oct 09, 2019
A small group of mid-century enthusiasts recently gathered in Killarney Heights at a Safari (c1962) by Lend Lease, architect Nino Sydney. There are currently only 18 examples of the Safari, and our host Martina’s family home is an excellent example in original condition. Stephen Batey then led a walking tour of the nearby Killarney Heights ‘Parade Of Homes’ 1963 display village site, to find original homes that still exist. This was followed by an open house at The Cedar House courtesy of Marcus from Modern House. We completed the days activities with a social evening in the lounge room of a lovely modernist home, thanks to our hosts Marc & Sue. A special thankyou to all our hosts and everyone who participated and attended, see you all again next year for some more MADness!

NEON: Lawrence Johnston’s NEON is a brightly coloured journey through the American dream, exploring how neon became a beacon for the hopes of a country. NEON begins in Paris in the 1920s and moves across the Atlantic to America which became enthusiastic about the light as it spread across the neon hot spots of the U.S. - New York, Los Angeles and especially Las Vegas. Johnston has collected a group of neon enthusiasts: people who have opened museums to classic neon as well as modern electric neon art; and people who have made neon their life. The Team Behind Our Web Design
Jun 01, 2016
The Australian Modern and Brisbane Modern websites have been online for a while now, performing an invaluable job of promoting our publications and events. We thought it was high time we let you know about the team behind designing and updating these great sites.
BA Creative is a web design business in East Brisbane. They are a small team of talented designers and developers who just so happen to be extremely friendly and helpful too.
We first started working with BA years ago when we needed to promote the Brisbane Modern publications. Since then they have helped us create a new website as well as performing regular maintenance and updates. They have also helped us out with other things such as branding and email set up.
We’re super-happy that we chose such a great team to work with all those years ago…

GENTLE MODERNIST: THE NINE LIVES OF ANATOL KAGAN BY SIMON REEVES
Nov 04, 2014
Drawing from Kagan’s own reminiscences and extensive personal archive, and interviews with family, colleagues and clients, architectural historian Simon Reeves vividly reconstructs the multi-layered life journey of a man who has been described both as ‘the enigmatic Anatol Kagan’ and ‘the gentle socialist who dreamt of a better world’.
Mid-century modernist architect Anatol Kagan (1913-2009) began his childhood in Revolutionary Russia, his young adulthood in Nazi Germany and his architectural career in London. Arriving in Melbourne in 1939, he had already crowded the experience of three lifetimes into his first 25 years. Jewish by race, agnostic by faith and Socialist by politics, this distinctive New Australian spent a decade establishing himself in his adopted homeland, working for leading architects and government departments before starting his own practice in 1949. Kagan rose to become the pre-eminent architect to Melbourne’s thriving post-war migrant community, well-known for luxurious modernist houses for…

Over The Border Vintage
Nov 30, 2012
I recently went on a road trip to northern New South Wales, visiting the small townships of Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads. These country towns are a step back in time, with speciality shops and grand old hotels lining the main street, they’re also a vintage shopping secret. My first destination was Re-Sould, 48 Tweed Street Brunswick Heads, where I met the delightful owner Louise. The Re-Sould showroom offers an excellent range of quality vintage goods, from homewares to furniture, and fabulous custom lampshades using vintages fabrics. Louise takes great pride in her shop with classic vintage items for all tastes and budgets, a must visit when you’re in the area. www.resould.com.au
Ten minutes down the road is Cloudland 20th Century, 45 Burringbar Street Mullumbimby, which stocks interesting mid-century designer items and furniture. The…

M.A.D. Hawaiian Christmas Party at Jacobi House
Nov 08, 2012
Fifty five years young might be how you would describe the Jacobi House, a unique 1 bedroom modernist house, designed by architects Hayes & Scott in 1957. The current owners have been busy in ‘restoration mode’ for the last two years. Last Saturday night the Australian Modern MAD (modernist architecture & design) group were invited to attend an Hawaiian themed Christmas party at Jacobi House, for a colourful celebration of mid-century architecture. The house has been widely published during its history, including a cover story in the mid 1960s for Australian House & Garden magazine, also a recent article in Brisbane Modern magazine.
The special guest on the night was the original home owner, Joan Jacobi. Everyone wanted to talk to Joan and she was happy to chat about the features of the house, and her experiences working with the original architects. A special thankyou to our hosts…

Collusion House Concert: Review by Alan Lawrence - Saturday 8 September 2012
Sep 19, 2012
I went to a concert of contemporary art music last Saturday. Collusion, a leading modern music ensemble, was performing a programme entirely consisting of 20th and 21st century music. You are probably now imagining a concert hall or a theatre of some kind and in a funny way you’d be right, except that this performance venue was some one’s living room. Okay – so I must be writing from Paris or some other European capital where the traditions of the 18th century salon still survive among certain of the rich, famous, and culturally inclined members of society. Well actually…
Chris Osborne and Susan Bennett of Brisbane suburb, Carina, have a somewhat unusual habit of putting on first class cultural events in their own house and then inviting all their friends. I’ve been lucky enough to hear jazz, watch plays, attend…

Vintage Caravan Magazine meets Australian Modern
Aug 10, 2012
The sun was shining on Greazefest 2012 for their annual event on Sunday 5 August at the Rocklea Showgrounds. The crowds flocked to enjoy a day of rockabilly bands, vintage fashion, car show, and collectable shopping at the 100 plus stalls. It’s also a good opportunity to catch up with old and new friends.
Australian Modern is a big fan of Vintage Caravan Magazine, and you’ll find the lovely Lisa and her caravan, both colour co-ordinated in pink, at a lot of shows around Australia. You can also pick up a funky Vintage Caravan Magazine tee shirt, or any back copies that you might have missed. Do yourself a favour and subscribe to Vintage Caravan Magazine www.vintagecaravan.com and support a local independent publication, or visit Lisa on the road.
I was also fortunate to be able to…

MAD Weekend: Fun For Everyone
Jul 06, 2012
Our modernist architecture and design MAD Weekend was a huge success, including many new faces in the crowd. It was a stellar line-up on Friday night for 20/20 Vision, including local award winning architects Stuart Vokes, Bud Brannigan and Brian Steendyk. Our hostess Susan led off the proceedings with a unique Go-Go routine and slide show of Pucci fashion for Branniff Airlines c1960s. Some of the other highlights were: Judy showed us the recent past with images of Gold Coast motels. Two very different jewellery designers, Robyn (QLD) and Genevieve (NSW), featured funky examples of their work. Marcus (Tiki Beat) presented the evolution of Tiki bars in the USA, with a sneak preview of his new Tiki Bar design in WA. Paul illustrated the glamour of travel with a colourful selection of early Australian travel posters. Marg shared her experiences of Japanese culture. Annalisa proudly showed us images…

Brisbane Indesign Review: Saturday 26 May
May 30, 2012
The Australian Modern team started at the ILVE showroom at Coorparoo for Brisbane Indesign. A special thankyou to the delightful ILVE staff for their hospitality, and a wonderful breakfast and coffee selection. We decided to park and take the free shuttle bus into Fortitude Valley, and then continue with a walking tour of the showrooms. Living Edge had a stylish display of new and classic designs, and the dispensing machine with ‘ Keep it Real’ badges speaks volumes about supporting original design. A novelty display was the mini cork chair competiton, constructed from Chandon champagne corks, some of our team were thirsty just thinking about it.
Luckily the next stop wasn’t far away, Smeg had set up a bar in the Coco Republic showroom, complete with an array of dishwashers and ovens, and funky Smeg fridges full of ice cold bubbly, which was flowing freely. Our next…

Marvelous Melbourne
Mar 30, 2012
My recent trip down south started with a private slide show at Outre Gallery on Friday night for a group of selected guests, followed by the official Melbourne launch for Australian Modern.
It was a great opportunity to meet more mid century architecture and design enthusiasts, Martin and all the team at Outre Gallery sure know how to put on a good night. The next morning I met with Dean at Angelucci 20th Century in Fitzroy for an Australian Modern instore promotion. Dean created a lounge room in the showroom, so visitors could chat and stay awhile in a relaxed environment, and be inspired by all the amazing furniture on offer. Greetings Australian Modernists
Dec 22, 2011
A few weeks ago I met Professor Adrian Franklin, popular ABC Collectors panelist and author. He recently released his latest book, Retro, which I can highly recommend for all you collectors out there. Adrian offered to participate in Australian Modern, so with some last minute re-arranging he now has his own column, offering a unique viewpoint on modernist design.
Australian Modern will be announced soon, including a half page ad in the January issue of Vintage Caravan Magazine, and a full page ad in the February issue of Fuel Magazine. Look out for both of these independent publications, which are also inspired by mid 20th century design and culture.
It’s been a hectic last couple of months completing Australian Modern, and when you read this it will be finally be at the printers. Australian Modern is an independent publication, proudly designed, edited and printed…
